Malayalam script is one of the most visually distinctive writing systems of South India. Its flowing, curved characters are used by 38 million speakers in Kerala and communities worldwide.

The script evolved from the ancient Grantha script and shares features with both Tamil and Sanskrit-derived languages.

Malayalam has 13 vowels and 36 consonants and 12 vowel signs with extensive conjunct forms.

Overview of Malayalam Script

Malayalam is an abugida - each consonant carries an inherent vowel (a) that can be modified. The script has more consonants than Tamil because it includes Sanskrit sounds.

ിി

How Vowel Signs Work

With the consonant ക (ka):

  • ക + ാ = കാ (kā)
  • ക + ി = കി (ki)
  • ക + ു = കു (ku)
  • ക + െ = കെ (ke)
  • ക + ൈ = കൈ (kai)

This pattern applies consistently across all consonants.

Unique Features

The ഴ Sound (zha)

Malayalam shares with Tamil the unique ഴ sound - a retroflex approximant found nowhere else in Indian languages. It appears in the word മലയാളം (malayāḷam) itself.

Conjunct Consonants (കൂട്ടക്ഷരം)

When consonants cluster without vowels, they combine into conjuncts. Malayalam has extensive conjunct forms, especially for Sanskrit words:

  • ക്ക (kka)
  • ന്ന (nna)
  • ല്ല (lla)
  • മ്മ (mma)

Chillaksharam (ചില്ലക്ഷരം)

Malayalam has special final consonant forms called chillu letters:

These appear at the end of syllables without a following vowel.
